I usually hesitate to try Indian restaurants outside of India, but Semma completely changed my mind!

Fortunately, I didn’t have to struggle with reservations because my sister snagged one for me while I was traveling to New York. Having craved Indian food throughout my trip, Semma did not disappoint and exceeded all expectations. It truly lives up to the hype.

We began our meal with sprouted mung beans, atta kari sukka (lamb), and gunpowder dosa. Each dish was a burst of authentic flavors. The Paniyaram Lobster Tail, Goat Biryani, and parottas that followed were equally impressive and delicious.

For desserts, we ordered the delicious mango custard. The shahi tukda has been removed from the menu unfortunately and I was really looking forward to it!

Overall, the food, service, and ambiance were exceptional. If you’re looking for outstanding Indian cuisine in NYC, Semma is a must-visit

The food was excellent (the gunpowder dosa alone will make me book a trip to NYC, speaking as a South Indian)! Our server was great, knowledgeable on the portion sizes. We preordered the Dungeness Crab. The desserts were outstanding- we had the elaneer payasam and mango custard.

The only issue with the experience is the relative lack of restrooms – the only one is mixed gender and down a very steep and long flight of steps, so there were long queues and my elderly parents found it hard to navigate.

Amazing Indian food in a relaxing and chic setting. Great price for a Michelin star restaurant and service is fantastic. My favorites were the dosa and the mung beans. The squash kurma was a bit bland compared to the other dishes. The cocktails were also incredible.

We ordered the odiyal kool (seafood soup), mulaikattiya thaniyam (mung bean salad), gunpowder dosa, attu kari sukka (roasted pepper lamb), meen pollichathu (sea bass) along with the parotta and white rice. Everything came out perfectly timed and absolutely delicious. We have never eaten a meal where absolutely everything was as delicious as the next. My husband was born and raised in South India and he deeply appreciated the experience of an elevated blend of South Indian flavors.

I honestly could not make a favorite in the meal- everything was perfectly cooked, seasoned, and timed. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Panakkaran old fashioned, which was incredibly balanced with the perfect amount of spice and smoke.

Fully lives up to its hype! My mom and I stopped it as a walk in (with very low hopes of being seated) and were able to snag an outdoor table. Absolutely sensational south Indian food that I can easily say is on par with the dishes I know and love in Tamil Nadu. I have very high standards for biryani and this was one of the best I’ve had in the city. The prawns were so flavorful and cooked to perfection.

The parottas were soft and flaky, just melted in my mouth. Special mention for the cocktails as well! Totally nailed the desi flavors, they were so creative. We finished off our meal with the elaneer payasam and it was the perfect dessert for a hot summer day. We shared one, but honestly I regret not getting one on my own. I can’t wait to come back here and try more!
